OBJECTIVE: By the end of class today SWAT apply the skills of Literary Analysis to
                       “THE FURY OF THE NORTHMEN,” “GILGAMESH” & “THE ILIAD”



DO NOW: VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT PAGE 57:  FILL IN THE BLANK USING THE VOCAULARY DEVELOPMENT WORDS:

DIRECT INSTRUCTION: Examine the picture on page 58.  This picture represents GILGAMESH as a subduer of lions, a role assumed by many heroes.  The lion is a contradictory figure because it symbolizes both kingship (civilization) and savagery (civilization’s opposite).   (1) In a descriptive paragraph describe GILGAMESH and the lion .  (2) Are the proportions realistic?  Describe please. (3) What conclusions can be drawn about GILGAMESH?



GUIDED PRACTICE: ORAL READING ACTIVITY (GILGAMESH PAGES 58 to 63)



INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1)    Examine GILGAMESH’S speech on page 58 lines 1 to 42.  What reasons for fighting HUMBABA does GILGAMESH give in this speech?
2)    Examine lines 1 to 16 on page 58.  Summarize GILGAMESH’S attitude toward death in a short paragraph.  Pull examples from the text.
3)    Examine page 59 lines 43 to 50.  Describe GILGAMESH’S character.
4)    Describe ENKIDU’S character.
5)    Examine the picture on page 59.  How does this picture/sculpture illustrates GILGAMESH’S status as an epic hero?
6)    Examine lines 62 to 70.  How do GILGAMESH and ENKIDU support each other in this passage?
7)    Examine your answer in # 6 again.  What does this reveal about their friendship?
8)    Examine lines 80 to 94 on page 60.  What might the dark forest symbolize/represent?
9)    Examine lines 95 to 112.  There are recurring themes here.  Enkidu’s fear and pain during the night are exacerbated by having to face them alone, as GILGAMESH is sleeping.  What themes recur in this passage?  Pull out examples from the text and discuss them in paragraph form.
10) Examine lines 124 to 138.  What is happening here with GILGAMESH?
